Hands of Kali: experimental bellydance theatre
Description
MAGI
An-Magrith "Magi" Erlandsen is a Norwegian-American Seattle native and has been studying bellydancing since 1992. After an extensive trip to Indonesia she decided to explore the connections between dance, ritual and spirituality and found bellydancing to be the perfect vehicle for this expression. Magi has primarily studied with Delilah and performed with the Visionary Dancers throughout the Seattle area.
Growing up in rural New Hampshire, the highlight of my year was to walk through the July heat to our town street fair. Delights were myriad: Rides, cotton candy, balloons, shopping and face painting. For myself, at the age of 10, the best part was the grace of the belly dancers. Beautiful women, shimmering sequins, silken veils, high heels and flashing smiles filled with a love of life that I could just begin to feel. I couldn't imagine being so amazing.
I was shy and insecure, but with a grim resolve, I took my first bellydancing class, with Lorraine Purdy. She had been dancing for over 20 years and was one of the women I had seen dance at those street fairs.
