Hanalei Poi Company is definitely a family affair. The 26-year-old Fitzgerald could very well have poi in his blood. His family has farmed taro, the plant from which poi is made for close to 50 years in Hanalei Valley.
His mother, Rose, still works long hours in the fields, and on the days the mill is operating, helps out there as well. His father, Michael G. Fitzgerald, who has a penchant for fixing things, still takes care of all the equipment on the farm and at the mill.
