Walking Robots

Description

Excerpted from the website:

Although it is easy for people to walk, it is challenging for two-legged robots to walk. The location of the robot's center of gravity is constantly changing relative to its moving legs. A gyrobot uses one or more internal gyroscopes to maintain its balance as it performs complex movements. A "Gyrobot" is a robot that uses gyroscopic systems to maintain stability while walking over uneven terrain. One of the greatest challenges for robotic movement is navigation in a cluttered environment. Wheels and treads are nearly always inadequate for motion in such settings. Walking with three or more legs allows improved flexibility than wheels, but can be slow. Bipedal walking with two legs offers both flexibility and quickness if the problem of balance may be addressed. Gyrobots will likely walk with both flexibility and relative velocity over uneven terrain.
