My Background
One of my first subjects after becoming interested in photography was the Stanford women's gymnastics team. I had developed a working relationship with the coaching staff as a writer for the Stanford Daily newspaper, and the coaches were kind enough to allow me to develop my skills photographing the practice sessions. Collegiate gymnastics remains one of my favorite subjects, and I have been to the past five Women's NCAA Championship meets. I wish that I could photograph more men's gymnastics meets. However, given that many meets (including the NCAA championship meets) are held simultaneously in different cities, I am forced to make a choice. Personal as well as business pressures favor the women's meets in these cases.
I have expanded from the collegiate arena to photograph several international gymnastics meets. In addition, I "discovered" the sport of Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics (RSG) in 1996, and it has become my absolute favorite photographic subject. I also photograph other sports when I get the chance, and one of my favorites is basketball. My experience with gymnastics photography has also led me into the area of dance photography. In addition to photographing the Stanford Ballet's performance of the Nutcracker for several years, I have provided my services to several professional sports dance teams, including the San Jose Rhinestones.
In order to keep myself busy during the summer months (which are off-season for collegiate gymnastics and basketball), as well as to diversify my commercial possibilities, I have also expanded into location portfolio photography for aspiring models. I have a strong preference for outdoor, available-light images, both because of the more natural look and because it requires less equipment and setup. I hope that I will soon be able to combine this with movement photography to produce some on-location dance images.
