Description
GWIS is the Graduate Women in Science organization. We are a non-profit association that works to advance the participation and recognition of women in science and to foster research through grants, awards, and fellowships.
Because GWIS has over 15 local chapters throughout the US, plus the District of Columbia, it is likely that there is a chapter near you. The GWIS National Office is located in St. Paul, MN
GWIS was established in 1921 - just one year after women achieved suffrage - by a group of women graduate students at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, which ultimately became the Alpha chapter. The Beta chapter of GWIS in Madison, WI followed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1922. The newest chapter was formed in 2008 in Hawaii and there has been recent interest in chapter formation in Raleigh, NC and Chicago, IL.
