At Esgyrn, we have a large herd of Guanaco built up over 18 years and licensed under the 'Dangerous Wild Animals Act'. Two qualities make them particularly interesting as a farmed animal: they produce a high quality fibre and they thrive under a wide range of conditions. As well as these factors, they are extremely rewarding and intriguing to work with.
At Esgyrn, the welfare of our animals is of the utmost importance and we are continuously reviewing our management practises to ensure we and the animals receive the best results. We try to run the farm as close to the Natural system as is possible. Guanacos are induced ovulators and can therefore breed at any time of the year. To eliminate this possibility, we introduce the male to the females in late spring early summer to keep our calving as tight as possible the following year after a gestation of approximately 345 days.
