About GTCS
GTC Scotland is the independent regulatory body for the teaching profession in Scotland. Our purpose is to maintain and enhance professional standards and improve the quality of teaching and learning in Scotland.
We were set up in 1965 under the Teaching Council Scotland Act following concerns that entry requirements had lowered after the Second World War and unqualified teachers were working in Scottish Schools.
We were the first professional registration body for teachers in the UK and one of the first Teaching Councils in the world.
