After a family loss in 1994 we made a decision to simplify our lives by moving from the Lower Mainland to the Okanagan and down-sizing our job responsibilities. Lawrie Belliveau (aka Grumpy) had a career in Air Traffic Control and his wife Monica was an Early Childhood Educator. Lawrie transferred to Kelowna tower and Monica continued her ECE work with both desiring early retirement - operating a bed and breakfast seemed to be the means to this end.
In 1997 we opened a B&B in Kelowna on a small scale to see if this really was for us. The first thing we had to do was choose a name: we wanted a "hook", a name people would remember. Lawrie's coworkers had affectionately (?) nicknamed him "Grumpy" a number of years ago and our grand-children were encouraged to call him "Grumpy" instead of "Grandpa" - it seemed logical to capitalize on this. After consultation with friends and family, and hours of deliberation, we decided on "Grumpy's Place". The seal of approval came when we went to register the name and the clerk laughed and laughed, then said "What a great name!" With a name and a business licence we opened our home to the public. We found that we did like operating a B&B and we wanted to pursue it further.
In 2000 we moved to Kaleden and proceeded to build our dream home. "Grumpy's Place" re-opened for business in Kaleden in the late spring of 2002 with two designated B&B rooms: each deluxe guest room provides private bathroom and amenities including in-room fridges, TVs, VCRs, and wireless high-speed internet. Our new home is only 12 minutes from downtown Penticton and we provide transportation to and from the Penticton Airport or bus depot.
