Title

Grinnell College - Front Door

Description

Students who took his course The Language of Neurons praise the clarity of his presentation and integration of laboratory work with other classroom activities. His colleagues in the department credit him with playing a major role in designing and teaching this innovative signature course for the department.

Lindgren's colleagues and students note his commitment to investigative learning and to helping students become comfortable with research in the primary literature. Lindgren is very active in student-faculty research (he has worked with 44 students in his teaching career); this has resulted in peer-reviewed papers with co-author credit going to students who have made notable contributions to the results. He also frequently takes students to regional and national scientific meetings.

Lindgren's research focuses on chemical communication between nerves and muscles at the synapse, using electrophysiological, optical, and pharmacological techniques. External reviewers comment on the high quality of his research skills, his broad knowledge, and his clarity of presentation (the last characteristic being especially valuable in a faculty member at a liberal arts college that prizes effective communication).
