Giorgio Maria Griffa was born in Biella, Italy, in 1944. He tried a number of artistic techniques before settling on water-colour as the most appropriate means for translating his memories of journeys onto paper. His water colours have been exhibited in galleries all over the world and accounts of his trips have been pubblished in numerous magazines in Italy and abroad. He wrote and illustrated the volume 'Breakfast and Brunch' (Idealibri, 1988). In 1995, with the photographer Fabrizio Lava, he published 'Tierra del Fuego' (Eventi&Progetti,1995). In December 1998 he travelled in the Antarctic and South georgia painting the old abandoned whale stations and followed the epic voyage of the explorer Ernest Shackleton. 'Water-colour Journeys' (Nuages, 1999), came out the following year. Just published in 2005 'The Stevenson's Lighthouses'.
