HostGIS Linux is an operating system designed to simplify the entry into the world of open-source web-based GIS. Open-source GIS is a great thing, but installation is often a long and painful process. Although there are precompiled kits out there (e.g. FGS) they often lacked certain features such as an already-operating database, and still required time to install the base OS and then the kit. That's why there's HostGIS Linux.
