Description

The History of Grey Gables Farm, your romantic getaway in beautiful British Columbia, Canada

Started in 1920, the original portion of the house was built as a weekend getaway for the owner who lived and worked in the Endowment Lands of Vancouver. Over the years the house has been renovated and additions have brought it to its present state. Many of the original tall cedars still stand on the property, providing shade and protection for the seasons.

Grey Gables Channel, one of the Federal Department of Fisheries & Oceans' Salmon Enhancement Projects & situated immediately below the house, provides a natural habitat for animal and birdlife. This body of water which is approximately 3/4 km long & totally self-contained, is linked to the nearby South Alouette River by an underground filtration and feeding system. Starting in October each year and usually running into mid-December, various species of salmon can be seen returning to spawn in the channel. In the summer months, sitting on the bridge over the water, the results of this spawning can be seen in their various stages of development. We invite our guests to enjoy watching the hawks and eagles soar, the deer graze, and during the summer evenings quietly observe the beavers going about their business . Our resident heron is a delight to watch.

We have had varying numbers of sheep on the farm since 1983 when the first two, "Esk" and "Mo" were introduced to act as resident lawn-mowers. Since then we have had as many as 20 and as few as 3 sheep at any one time. Jenny the donkey joined the family of animals in 1992 when it became expedient to have some sort of protection for the flock.
