About Me
I am an artist passionate about the process of creating. I love to make sculpture and functional art out of found objects and materials of seemingly little or no value. I began working in mosaic while in Graduate school. At that time, I was working with beads, creating small three dimensional figures, but I wanted to work faster and larger. My early influences were Sam Rodia's watts tower and Antoni Gaudi's Park Güell. My personal work draws inspiration from African and Pre Columbian art, which are part of my ethnic heritage.
I have a particular interest in African art and the arts and crafts of the Americas. I love to work in bold colors and with a sense of humor. I am self-trained in mosaic and have a great interest in the history of mosaic. I enjoy experimenting.
Mosaics adorn and enliven any living space. They are a sustainable art form which is both functional and beautiful. Mosaics do not have to be expensive, they just need to be well made and of quality material. Mosaics can be made from just about any material. I have experience in a great variety of traditional mosaic materials (vitreous glass tile, smalti, ceramic, porcelain and stone) and also the more unusual (bottle caps, beads and found objects). Because they can be made from salvaged tile, glass and stone, they are a great way to recycle and reuse all kinds of materials. Mosaics bring permanence to our throw away culture.
