Description
The church is located on 179th Street and Fort Washington in Washington Heights, a predominantly Latino working class neighborhood (more on history of Washington Heights). Also, check out places of interest near the church and the Washington Heights Directory for more information about the area. Significantly it is located across the street from the George Washington Bridge Bus Station and pretty much right next to the George Washington Bridge, making it a VERY easy place to get to and find. Lots of buses run to the Station from points in New Jersey and NY State and the A train runs directly into the terminal. Getting to the church from the terminal is literally a matter of going outside and crossing the street. Local buses service is also available within the city. Addition transport information.
The northernmost section of Manhattan, the Washington Heights/Inwood area was home to a Native American settlement where the sale of Manhattan was negotiated in 1626 as well as the site of the Revolutionary War Battle of Fort Washington. The early 20th century saw a rapid population of the area as European immigrants who lived in lower Manhattan began to move to the north. The rest of the century saw a continued influx of immigrants from all parts of the globe and the area is rich in ethnic diversity. The hilly area has splendid parkland and stunning views of the Hudson River and the Palisades. Enjoy a stroll through shady Fort Tryon Park and Inwood Hill Park. Walk (or bus) up the steep hill to the Cloisters, and be transported back to a medieval monastery, surrounded by tapestries, art, and monastic gardens. Bike across the George Washington Bridge for even more spectacular views, or walk to the northernmost point in Manhattan, Spuyten Duyvil, and see the confluence of the Harlem and Hudson Rivers. Also visit Yeshiva University and its museum.
The church has two levels. The upper level has a ramp leading up to the door, making it fully wheelchair accessible. The main church area is quite large and can easily accomodate our full crowd.The upper level has a few nooks that could work for breakouts. Two of them would be fairly small, one would be medium sized, and the fourth would be fairly large. To the right and left of the pews are wide aisles that can easily accommodate information tables.As for the lower level, it has two fairly large spaces, one that can probably accommodate about 100 and another than can accommodate about 50. The smaller of the two can accommodate about two breakouts. The larger space is available at all times. Meals will probably be done on the lower level. We can house up to 70 activists in the upper level of the church.
