John was born in New York City and raised in suburban Long Island. In 1977 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Modern History and a minor in Political Science from Hofstra University.. After graduation he traveled across America and to Europe. When he returned he moved into New York City and obtained a position on the staff of the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. He was so impressed by the lawyers there he decided to become one himself.
