About The GlycoScience.org Site

The purpose of this site is to educate and, thereby, foster further research into the nutritional effects of dietary supplement ingredients. The site is maintained by the Research and Development Department of Mannatech™ Inc., a U.S.-based company. It is designed for use in the U.S. by U.S. health professionals, consumers and interested scientists who are conducting research in the areas addressed in this database.

The site is designed to responsibly take advantage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), which granted new freedoms to distributing companies in the area of information that could be made available to consumers in connection with sale of product. The DSHEA not only allowed but encouraged companies to responsibly provide truthful and balanced educational scientific materials about their products to potential consumers. Materials that meet the standards of the law and that are used in this way are termed "labeling-exempt". That is, they are exempt from review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as labeling (promotional) materials. Labeling-exempt materials are publications reprinted in their entirety which:

These nonpromotional, educational materials may contain research information about potential effects of dietary supplements on disease conditions. Congress's intent in passing the law was to improve the health of the American people through improved product choices made by informed consumers. Congress believed that this, in turn, would lower healthcare costs for the nation. (See preamble to DSHEA.)
