Glasgow West End: Pat's guide to what's best in the West
Description
Although born in Glasgow at Rottenrow Maternity Hospital, I was brought up in Old Kilpatrick, a village half way between Glasgow and Loch Lomond. When I was young it was a great treat to go 'up the town' and Glasgow has always seemed to me an exciting place to be.
Whilst familiar with the City Centre the West End was a later discovery - when I went to Glasgow University as a student in the late 70's I began my exploration of its cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops. Since I moved into the area, 10 years ago, I have continued my investigation and although I could now be considered 'A West Ender' I remain intrigued by the place, the people, the parks, the history, the architecture and the atmosphere and continue my observation as though a privileged visitor.
I live in Glasgow Street in Hillhead with my husband Jim (the famous Jim Byrne - song writer, musician and Internet guru). I enjoy knowing that at one time Charles Rennie MacIntosh lived a couple of streets away and that Alexander "Greek" Thomson was the architect responsible for constructing part of Oakfield Avenue, round the corner where we used to live. I also enjoy living so near the University - where Jim and I were married in the beautiful Chapel. I have had two graduations there and still feel quite thrilled when I visit the cloisters.
