- Please edit the following letter and email it to members of the State House Tax Policy Committee urging them to support the House proposal to replace the Single Business Tax. The House Tax Policy Committee will meet May 1st and May 2nd to consider this substitute to HB 4367, the Michigan Business Tax. This proposal will raise the same amount of revenue as the current SBT, without shifting the burden to families and individuals. The current SBT annually generates $1.9 Billion in revenue, all of which goes to the General Fund. The SBT represents approximately one-quarter of General Fund revenues; the majority of the General Fund is used to support programs and services in the Departments of Community Health, Human Services, Higher Education and Corrections. Although there is more work to be done, this is a good first step towards solving the state's $3.5 Billion structural deficit. With the Single Business Tax (SBT) set to expire at the end of this year, it's imperative that a fair and equitable replacement be found soon to avoid additional cuts in programs and services.
