Le Marronnier was bought in 1999 at the end of an idyllic holiday in Espédaillac. It was "love at first sight" - and since then, the farmhouse has been a constant source of inspiration to the owners, Min and Bob. Not seriously looking to buy a property, Min saw the farmhouse on a hot, still July afternoon. Framed by the chestnut tree ("le marronnier"), the house looked just perfect.
The sale was agreed with the local farmer that same evening. Sat at his kitchen table, a toast was made to Le Marronnier with sweet wine straight from the vineyard opposite the house. Min and Bob made a trip to the notaire on the way home to England the next day to confirm the sale, and by October the farmhouse was theirs! Not the way to do it really, but all agree it will be a lasting relationship, and Min and Bob have never looked back!
As the new owners, their first job was to use stones to mark out the site for a pool. Then, after long, overnight deliberations and with much help from friends already resident in Espédaillac, the builders started in January 2000. By mid summer, the renovation was complete. On a hot July day, 16 friends and family celebrated with a "repas" under the chestnut tree in true French style!
