Girvan Visitor Centre
Description
The traditional resort of Girvan dates back to 1668 when it became a municipal burgh incorporated by charter. Its busy harbour is a centre of attraction for visitors; from here you can set off for a day’s sea angling or a visit to the gannets on Ailsa Craig
Stumpy Tower in Girvan was built in 1789, and was used as a tolbooth in Reform riots in 1832. The weather vane was donated by Provost Campbell Parker. Another imposing building, the McKechnie Institute, was built in Scots Baronial style in 1888, as part of a bequest of £6500 left to the town by a local grocer and wine merchant. The Institute is now used as a local art & Exhibition centre, where exhibitions are held all year round.
Recreational facilities in the town include an indoor swimming pool, putting green, golf course, bowling green and tennis courts. Girvan is proud of its reputation for floral attractions and colourful displays which are situated in many parts of the town. These include The Rose Gardens, Victory park, Knockcushion Gardens and Orchard Gardens
