Description

George Allen was born March 8, 1952, to George H. and Henrietta Allen. He attended “Mr. Jefferson’s University,” the University of Virginia, earning his undergraduate degree in history before going on to earn his law degree. While a student at UVa, he began his active involvement in politics in 1976 when he was named state Chairman of Young Virginians for Reagan.

Senator Allen settled in Albemarle County, opening his own law practice in an historic Charlottesville building that he restored himself. It was from the steps of this building that he made his first foray as a candidate, announcing for the State legislative seat once represented by Thomas Jefferson.

After serving in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1983 to 1991, Senator Allen won a special election in 1991 to represent the Seventh District in the United States House of Representatives. In 1993, he was elected Virginia’s 67th Governor, receiving more votes than any other candidate for Governor before or since. As Governor of Virginia, George Allen earned his reputation as a visionary conservative leader who kept his promises. The Allen administration abolished Virginia’s liberal, lenient, dishonest parole system and instituted truth-in-sentencing for violent criminals. His Champion Schools Initiative brought Virginia’s public schools the highest academic standards and accountability of any state. Virginia’s failed welfare system was reformed, cutting welfare rolls by half and providing greater independence to tens of thousands of Virginia families. Senator Allen made job creation the number one claim on his time. He attracted $14 billion in new investments and over 312,000 net new jobs to Virginia. All of this in just four years.
