Lesbian & Gay Switchboard West Midlands exists in order to promote the welfare of anyone attracted to the same sex, by means of a telephone answering service and by other means as and when required. All our workers are volunteers. We are available to the public every night of the year for three hours. Since our beginnings in 1975 we have taken over one hundred thousand calls. We have three lines, a Minicom to communicate with deaf people, a voice mail system offering information 24 hours a day and - now! - a website on the Internet.
Most of our work involves providing Callers with information - lesbian and gay venues, groups and facilities (local, national and international) - as well as information on accommodation, services, non-prejudiced doctors and solicitors, and information on sexuality, health and HIV.
We also provide completely confidential support to a large number of people with problems, most notably people who are discovering or exploring their sexuality for the first time and do not know what to do about it. Many of these Callers are nervous, confused or distressed. People may be calling about other problems such as difficulties with a relationship, worries about health matters or just looking fopr someone to talk to.
