Jim was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. At the age of 14, he worked at C.J. Whizzes in Beaver Dam as a dish washer, also helping to prep food and fill in as pizza cook. On one very busy Friday night, the pizza cook just simply walked out. Jim jumped in and started making pizzas. One way to quickly learn!
From there, at the age of 17, and after graduating from high school, Jim worked at Dominos in Sheboygan on the north side of town. He was quickly promoted from Assistant Manager to Manager within the first year. Jim was thrown into heavy volume as this was a very busy store. Here he learned to slap dough very fast and went on to compete in a regional Dominos competition, where he took 3rd place among all contestants as one of the fastest “dough slappers” in the area at that time. Jim learned the majority about the pizza industry through working here at Dominos. He experienced problems with the roughest and toughest crew members he ever had, however. Many of his employees were involved in gangs and there were many thieves to catch who worked there. Also, in those days, Dominos had no appetizers – their menu consisted only of pizza and coke products. Times have really changed!
