Description

About Furnace Farm

Furnace farm is a working family farm, which is being farmed by the third generation of Dowsons. The name furnace dates back to primitive iron smelting on the site in the 12th/13th century, while the present farmhouse is Victorian.

Until 2001 the 120 acres grassland farm was run as a mixed dairy and beef unit. Since then the farm has been run as a suckler cow unit consisting of around 40 mainly Simmental cows and followers, with calving taking place during April and May.

The farm is part of the North York Moors Farm Scheme, which involves conservation of farmland to improve wildlife habitats and the range of species found on the farm. Recently 10 acres of mixed woodland was planted next to the river, which includes a beautiful river walk for use by guests. Fishing is also available on the farm in the river Esk, with the purchase of day tickets from the local shop.
