- I was born in Oklahoma in 1950, but only lived there about a year. I grew up in Texas and have been here ever since. From the time I was very small I can remember always being busy creating things. I used a stick to mark off ‘rooms’ in the dirt to make the ‘house’ that I played in. My dirt floors were designed by using a broom to make pretty swirls and swishes, and I used rocks and pretty weeds for my home décor. With the water hose, an old coffee can, spoons borrowed from mama’s kitchen, and lids for pie pans, I made some pretty special mud pies. I would set them out in the sun to bake, carefully adding the final touches using sunflower petals and wildflowers. I made clothes for my dolls from scraps left over from mama’s dressmaking. My maternal grandmother taught me to crochet and embroider when I was in elementary school and I still love doing those things to this day. It was my High School Homemaking class that was almost my undoing. I told all my friends on the day that we had to model our creations that I would NEVER sew another stitch. That dreadful zipper in the A-line skirt that I put in and ripped out – put in and ripped out – just to pass the test was awful. I guess Mrs. Young decided that I had taken it out enough times when she finally gave me a passing grade, because all around my zipper were large enough holes that my slip showed through!
