Description

After several years and many calls to his studio asking, "Do you give lessons?," Bill van Gilder decided to create a school for pottery in 2000. Along with others he created the school to give everyone the opportunity and experience to work with clay, whether the goal is to build pottery by hand, learn to throw at the potter's wheel, or research and learn about clays, glazes, kilns and more. At its location in the Wye Creek Center in Frederick, MD, the school is equipped with twelve potters' wheels; a slab roller, extruder, and kiln; a selection of glazes, slips, and clays; and plenty of work space and ample storage areas for students' work and supplies.

Frederick Pottery exists to provide a safe, clean and well equipped learning facility with a no stress, yet creatively energized, friendly atmosphere. We provide experienced and talented instructors offering all levels of instruction, introductory to advanced, for all age groups. The Frederick Pottery School also provides monitored open studio "practice" time, and space and materials for students to develop their skills on an independent study basis.

At age 15 Bill van Gilder began his pottery career serving an apprenticeship with British-trained, master-potter Byron Temple. He trained in Ireland and England and is a graduate of Harrow School of art; Studio Potters, London. Van Gilder established potteries in Lesotho and Swaziland, Southern Africa. He is founder and owner of Frederick Pottery School, Inc., MD and is on the faculty of the Art League Studios, Torpedo Factory, Alexandria, VA. Currently, van Gilder maintains a studio and gallery atop S. Mountain, in central Maryland. His work is in art collections and publications worldwide.
