Friday, the day before the wedding was to take place, all involved parties convened upon the altar to rehearse our ceremonial duties. The occasion was notable, if for no other reason, because it was the first time I had seen many of my aunts, uncles, and cousins from Chicago and/or Ohio since 1997. Before we had the opportunity to say much, the Wedding Coordinator called the assembled to attention and began her spiel.
It soon became apparent that, despite her job title, she was wholly unfamiliar with the process of coordinating weddings. Every question received was met with a vague or non-committal answer, and even the most fundamental of details (like the names of the bride and groom) eluded her notice. We were relieved when another woman — I quietly speculated that she was the Wedding Coordinator Coordinator — arrived half-way through the debacle to pull our collective asses out of the fire.
The rehearsal continued apace, during which I was told that my reading skills were above average. (I would hope so; I was a lector at the same church for a number of years, and a member of the choir, and an altar server before that, back to a time before the church itself existed and mass was held in a nearby school cafeteria.) We were eventually disbanded, and led the caravan to my parents' house, wherein the traditional pre-post-rehearsal-dinner nosh was benoshed.
