Ford Barton's aim with their Wensleydale sheep is to preserve and protect this native breed whose numbers are rapidly diminishing due to modern intensive farming methods. Using the traditional
practise of extensive chemical free grazing, Wensleydale sheep are thriving here in the Devonshire countryside. The ancestors of today's sheep were known as the "Monks Larder". Its ability to provide not only wool for cloth making, but also milk for cheese, mutton for the table and tallow for lighting, gave the medieval population almost everything they required.
This breed is famous for having the finest of lustre longwools in the world. The Ford Barton Wensleydales are used purely as wool producers. Standing an average one metre high, this large sheep has a long curly lustrous fleece which in its first mature year reaches the ground and is capable of growing up to 8 kilos of wool. It continues to produce about 4-5 kilos a year for the rest of its life.
