ABOUT THE SOCIETY
The Folkestone and District Family History Society was founded in 1976 to encourage and promote the study of family history in the South East Kent area. It provides advice and assistance to members with South East Kent ancestry as well as to members whose roots are elsewhere, and welcomes the beginner and the more experienced family historian alike.
We meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30 pm in the United Reformed Church Community Hall, Castle Hill Avenue, Folkestone (close to Central Station). Our programme includes speakers on subjects of interest to beginners and experts alike, as well as discussion and project sessions. Time is allowed at meetings for informal exchange of advice and information, shopping at the bookstall, and borrowing from our library of books on general and local subjects and sources, and journals from other societies. A guided walk of a place of local historical interest is usually arranged in the summer, and we hold a one-day conference or similar event approximately every eighteen months.
The Society participates in projects to transcribe and index local source material and has strong links with the Folkestone Heritage Room. We are currently indexing the 1891 census for the Dover and Elham registration districts, and transcribing monumental inscriptions in churchyards in the area. The Society is also participating in the National Burial Index Project which is being coordinated by the Federation of Family History Societies. Anyone wishing to assist with these projects is invited to contact our Projects Coordinator
