The coastal strip of land south from Cape Tribulation to the Daintree River was declared open for selection in 1877 and recorded settlement of the region dates from the early 1880s. Crops such as maize, corn, pineapples and bananas later made way for cattle fattening, timber and other large scale primary industries.
In 1956 the first ferry operated on the Daintree River followed in 1963 by a dirt road linking the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation. Approval for settlement of 1100 freehold blocks was gazetted in the 1980s and in 1992 work commenced on the sealing of the road.
