Derek Grzelewski, the chief guide at Wanaka Flyfishing, is a man of many passions: writing, photography, flamenco guitar, but all these take second place when it comes to flyfishing. Derek has fished all his life and has settled in New Zealand primarily because of the country's unequalled fly-fishing opportunities. He has written two definitive articles on fishing commissioned and published by the New Zealand Geographic magazine: The Lure of Trout, and Salmon, the Miracle Fish.
It was really fun for me that I spent two days with Derek flyfishing at the incredible beatiful rivers. In spite of not good weather and river condition, Derek found ideal places of two different environments. Also despite of my poor experience (I'm almost a bigginer), with his precise advice, I got 3 rainbows and had good opportunities of getting trophy size brown trout. Actually I'm sorry I couldn't catch them, but if I had a bit more technique, I'm sure I could get that fishes!! However, it was really exciting and I enjoyed very much talking , walking and fishing with Derek. I like his quiet, but accurate and inteligent style. I'm sure I will come back and catch big trouts with you next time! Thank you for your kind hospitality and good advice
