At the wee age of seventeen, Rob agreed to join Kevin for a summer on the Renaissance festival circuit. They would perform a show of their own creation across the country and all they needed was a vehicle, places to perform, and a show. Kevin secured a Volkswagen bus, and one contract, leaving Rob the final task of "what the hell do we do?".
Their combined juggling skills would not have gotten them a job at the grand-opening of a grocery store in the deep rural South, so the hunt began for a money trick, a phrase which here means a trick that people would pay money to see. Two years earlier Rob had seen a documentary of a carnival traveling through Canada. Somewhere in Manitoba the fire-eater ran away with the local girl and the cotton candy vendor was corralled as the replacement. Rob's future was altered as dramatically as the cotton candy vendor's had been when behind a refrigerator truck the secrets of fire-eating were revealed. The memory of that lesson gave Rob the nerve, if not the knowledge, to first eat fire.
It is a great leap of faith, though, to actually cram a flaming brand into your mouth, having only seen it on television. The words "flaming" and "idiot" logically came to mind as Rob practiced this deadly feat alone every night for a month. When he and Kevin began consuming fire at the Port Sanilac, MI Renaissance Festival, their debut performance, there was no doubt in the audiences mind that they were watching Flaming Idiots.
