Presbyterian Church in Homestead, Florida, First Presbyterian Church of Homestead

Description

First Presbyterian Church History

Before our church was organized, worshippers met in a community Sunday School in Naranja. The hurricane of September 1926 destroyed the building, inspiring the Presbytery Superintendent to seek aid from the Evangelism Committee of Southeast St. John's Presbytery [PCUS]. A study led to the decision to locate a new church in the town of Homestead, which had itself been incorporated in 1913.

In Novemeber 1926, sixty one people signed a petition to the presbytery requesting the organization of the church. On December 5, 1926, the church was chartered, and met in the Homestead Elementary School.

The first years of the history of this church were not encouraging. This area had been hit hard by the hurricane that played a part in the beginning of the new church. The financial boom of the early 1920s was rapidly deflating, and there were few places where the ecomony fell flatter than the lower east coast of Florida. In 1931 the congregation lost its pastor, the membership dwindled, and then the meeting place was lost. The church was in danger of disbanding. But, as true Presbyterians, a committee was appointed to explore the possibility of securing property and erecting our own building.
