From 1764 – 1774 – Rev. Edmund Matthews lived on Hilton Head Island serving as pastor of the Baptist Church . S.C. Baptists continued to worship on Hilton Head up to the time of the war in 1861.
1956 – Mr. Virgil Woods consulted Rev. Gaines H. Mason, pastor of the Ridgeland Baptist Church , concerning a mission Sunday School on Hilton Head. In the early summer of that same year, Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Richardson of Thomasville, GA moved to the island and volunteered their home as a temporary meeting place.
On Sunday, August 5, the Hilton Head Baptist Sunday School opened in the living room of the Richardsons with 56 present.
