Description
E. B. Culver first established business as a Funeral Director & Undertaker/Cabinet Maker in the mid-1870's, opening shop on Dresser Avenue in Great Barrington. Later, in 1918, Henry A. Stevens moved the business to its current location at 426 Main Street. After World War II, Henry's son, Milton Stevens, became a partner in the firm, running the business into the late 1970's. For the past 20 years, Milton's daughter, Laura Jane and her husband, Kevin B. Finnerty, have been operating the funeral home which is now called Finnerty & Stevens. Recently, Meghan Laura Finnerty, Henry Steven's great-grandaughter, completed her training and received her Funeral Director's License. She was sworn in on December 11, 2001, which was one month after her great-grandfather's 100th anniversary of receiving his license in November of 1901. For four generations now, Finnerty & Stevens has been committed to a tradition of community, personal attention, and unmatched service.
In 1999 Finnerty & Stevens central office doubled in size. Plans were made and completed added a federal colonial style wing to the historic building. This building, which was originally built in 1815 on Taylor Hill, Main Street Great Barrington, now boasts a single chapel capable of holding larger services with seating for nearly 200. Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home still provides a choice a choice of smaller, more intimate, family rooms understanding the personal needs of each family.
A choice of rooms such as the William Cullen Bryant room, the Esther Lewis Stevens room (which can comfortably seat up to 80 people), the Great Room, or the Blue Room is available. We are making every effort to make the Funeral Home more comfortable for the families we serve.
