Description

Anglophiles with something to prove. Five young men on a quest to put the "rock" back into "indie". Electro-shoe gazers with a Bowie fetish, transcending genre and category as styles coalesce and blur the influences they once wore on their sleeves. A schizophrenic juxtaposition of pop and art, Fashionista's sound renders the listener active rather than inert. You will sing along to songs about drug addiction, unrequited love, and mental illness. You will dance to songs about suicide.

Fashionista formed in 1998 following the dissolution of Anthony Fashion's Shoe Gazer band, Capsella, and the breakup of Howard Melnick's Goth group. The two, friends since grade school, immediately began writing songs together at Howard's Ft. Lauderdale-based studio. The result was a heavy mix of The Smiths and My Bloody Valentine. Soon, George Borghi (keyboards, piano, Juno 6), an old friend of Anthony's and former keyboard player for Capsella, got onboard and an outpouring of catchy, keyboard-based and decidedly glam-influenced songs began to take shape around the Britpop and Goth skeleton that Anthony and Howard had developed. It was during this time that the 'Neptune, "King of the Sea" EP was recorded and released on their own imprint. An effort that showed a band heavily indebted to The Smiths and The Cure as well as The Stooges and The New York Dolls, 'Neptune..' sounded like a band trying to find their own distinct voice. They soon would. A constant revolution of rhythm sections did not prevent the group from playing shows in South Florida, nor did it stymie the band's direction as Fashionista continued to evolve and their sound matured.

Dylan Asher (drums), a talented writer and author of several books, joined the group in 2001. Dylan's tasteful playing style mirrored the group's penchant du jour for writing more concise, tuneful, dance songs. He also encouraged the band's desire to incorporate more synthetic instruments and drum machines into their music as Fashionista's unique style began to take shape. The final piece in the puzzle was affixed when Ry (bass), then-guitar player for Miami indie pop stalwarts, Marqui Adora, finally joined. Not only did this cement the final incarnation of the band, but also reaffirmed the band's faith in what they were doing. Ry brought a sense of unity to a disoriented Fashionista.
