In 2003, Family Pools & Spas was inducted into the Aqua 100 Hall of Fame. Aqua is the national business magazine for pool and spa professionals. The Aqua 100 Award is presented to companies across America that "represent the best, most successful and professional businesses in the pool and spa industry." They have been judged by a panel of their peers to embody excellence in retail, building, and service. These are the businesses that define an industry and serve as an example for others to follow. Family Pools & Spas have won the Aqua 100 Award for five years in a row and were one of only thirteen Hall of Fame inductees announced for 2003, bringing the total number given this honor to 61.
In 1975, Ken Uhler was an excavator who agreed to dig one pool "for a guy north of here." That customer suggested that Uhler consider the pool business. More than 28 years later, Ken is retired from the business that started in his garage and moved to two store locations full of hot tubs, grills, pool chemicals, and accessories. With the help of Ken's wife Pam, who still works full time at the Ashland store and quite a bit of sage advice from Ken, a second generation of the family is in charge now. The Wooster business is managed by daughter, Becky Clark, and the Ashland location is managed by daughter, Mary Pheneger. Mary's husband, Dave, is Family Pools & Spas service manager. Ken and Pam's son, Steve, does the excavating for the company which brings the family full circle. "We always truly believe in what we are selling, and that's family fun."
