Planning for ExtremePKI began in May 2003, when the site began development as PKI Pictures as a photo gallery site. It was soon changed to a general PKI site, and the name Extreme PKI was born. After months of design and planning, the Extreme PKI Forums opened on October 12 2003, and the main site was unveiled on December 14 2003.

On February 2 2005, IslandChat was opened. It is the first always-on PKI chat room on the web. It is accessable via the IslandChat link in the forums.

On March 21 2005, ExtremePKI Version 3 was released after several months of work. Version 3 features the best design ExtremePKI has featured so far, along with massive content updates. Unlike the Version 1 to Version 2 conversion, the entire site was rehabbed for Version 3.
