ExploreDillon.com was created in an effort to fill a need for the Dillon community. When my husband and I moved here in mid-2002, I discovered there was no one place to go online to learn "all about Dillon". We had tried to learn as much as possible before our move - we had been to Montana on vacation, but never to the southwest section of the state - but online information, and especially importantly to us, photos, were conspicuously scarce. What really drove this home was when we piloted our moving van into the Beaverhead Valley one afternoon in August, we realized that what we expected the area to look like, and what it actually looked like, were two very different things!
After living here for a few months, one day on a trip into town I casually mentioned to my husband, "what Dillon could use is a city guide", meaning an online city guide. And not just one of those sites that lists only a few paying advertisers, but something that left you with a real feeling for the area. This notion came at a good time; I had completed the requirements for Penn State University's Web Professional Certification the spring before, and while I had been creating web sites for others for awhile, more recently I'd been tossing around ideas for an original project that I could sink my teeth into.
I initially expected ExploreDillon.com to take 4 months from start to finish. Was I ever naive! I discovered that this little town of just over 4000 people has a lot going on. With a few breaks in the work, it took me slightly over a year to have the site "complete enough" to launch. That means that while I recognize that not everything or everybody is included yet that should be, the site is at the point where it is a useful resource, one I sure wish we'd had two years ago :-).
