Description
Costa Rica is probably the most biologically diverse, welcoming country in the world. Located on an isthmus between North and South America and bordered by the Pacific and Caribbean oceans, Costa Rica is a small, mountainous country characterized by amazing ecological systems, excellent climate, low crime, a stable government and unusually friendly people.
Spanish is the national language of Costa Rica and the currency is the Colon (currently about 420 colones = US $1). Many people here are also starting to speak English, due to the increasing importance of the local technology sector, a rapid rise in tourism from North America and a pro US attitude that is resulting in more trade being done between the two countries.
The Costa Rican government is democratically elected and regardless of which party is in office, the top priorities are invariably education, crime prevention, healthcare, tourism, and ecological and environmental preservation. This philosophy produces a very affluent population, low crime, and some of the cleanest air and finest drinking water anywhere on the planet - all factors which make this an attractive environment for tourists or part-time residents.
