Essence of the Mountains - nature art, found art by Robin August, Asheville, NC
Description
Art has always interested me but more as an observer, not an artist. I had a life-changing experience about five years ago when I became disabled and could not work in my profession as a Psychologist. I soon found that I missed my work immensely and the meaning that it provided for me. I moved to Western North Carolina where the mountains and forests provided solace. I made a promise that no matter how ill I felt, I would at least spend time in the forests that surrounded my home. While hiking one day, I noticed a large boulder resting next to a striking tree. Together, they created a natural sculpture. As I rested, I noticed that the shadow cast by the rock and the tree changed and thus, a constantly evolving sculpture appeared, a re-birth of sorts. I realized that the whole of the forest was like a giant palette full of natural art materials; trees, and leaves, and wildflowers. I was deeply touched by the idea that no matter how ill I was, I could still find beauty and meaning in my life.
I started to think about ways that I could bring the images that I found in the forest back to my home. I wanted to recreate the joy and the peace that I had found in the woods and this is how I embarked on the journey that I call my art. Later, I had the desire to share my art with others. I was deeply impacted by the writings of Matthew Fox who writes about what he calls Creation Spirituality. In his book, "Creativity", he states, "To speak of creativity is to speak of profound intimacy. Imagination brings about not just intimacy, but a big intimacy, a sense of belonging and being at home, of our knowing we have not only a right to be here but a task to do as well as we are here." And so, I am on a wonderful journey and hope that fellow seekers might be touched in some small way by my art.
