- The Epilepsy Center of Excellence is dedicated to research in epilepsy and to providing newer treatments and potential cures such as epilepsy surgery for the nearly 4% of the population affected by seizures or epilepsy. The Center provides breakthrough multidisciplinary epilepsy research in pharmacology, neuroelectrophysiology, neuroimaging, neurosurgery, biomedical engineering and public health. The Center also supports the oldest continuously operating quarternary epilepsy surgery program in Louisiana and the central Gulf south (est.1990; member National Association of Epilepsy Centers) that provides epilepsy diagnostic monitoring, the strategic use of antiepileptic medications, specialized epilepsy neuroimaging, vagus nerve stimulator implantation, ketogenic diet management, and epilepsy surgery. All individuals who continue to have seizures despite treatment by their doctor should be evaluated by the Center's clinical epilepsy team to determine if more advanced approaches to treatment will stop seizures or cure epilepsy.
