Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic disease caused by the chronic reflux of acid and non-acid (bile and pepsin) stomach contents into the esophagus. The refluxate damages the lining of the esophagus and causes heartburn. A major cause of GERD is weakness and dysfunction in a muscle at the junction of the esophagus and stomach known as the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES prevents reflux of gastric acid and non-acid contents into the esophagus.
