Description
I met Roberta in 1996, in Guatemala. I was there coordinating a project that worked with indigenous K’iche’ women in the rural community of Choquiac. Roberta’s older sister Hilda was a prominent leader in the project, and her mother Juana was also a participant. Near the end of the project Roberta became involved herself. Roberta caught my attention as being quite special.
I went to visit Choquiac Guatemala in December 2003 and discovered Roberta was in dire straights. I promised Juana I would help her daughter. Since then I have been dedicated to Roberta’s safety, protection, recovery and advancement.
I founded The Roberta Chanchavac Freedom Campaign in response to the outpouring of support Roberta is receiving from the community of Bellingham and beyond. Everyone who knows Roberta and her situation is strongly motivated to support her this time of need. I am putting this website together with the idea of organizing all of the collective good will into solidarity.
