I have been committed to health and wellness, and sharing and encouraging that same commitment in others since the age of eleven. Yes, eleven. That is not a misprint. Many people begin in college or in their late teens. But I watched my paternal grandfather suffer a series of strokes that left him speechless and bedridden. When I was nine years old he died. It took me a couple of years to figure it all out, and to understand the power we have in our hands to prevent such illnesses.
So, at the age of eleven, I began my quest to avoid catastrophic illness. I first refused to eat hot dogs and luncheon meat. Within months, I eschewed all meat. By the time I was fourteen, I had overcome my childhood habit of hating all vegetables, and I was preparing dishes that had rich varieties of vegetables I previously would have avoided, through the usual devious means, of slipping them onto a napkin and into the garbage can.
To begin at eleven makes a fundamental difference, not just in physical health and longevity but in outlook upon life. I have always considered the body a temple, and always felt it was my responsibility to take care of it, and to learn something about it. And, indeed found fascination in that.
