Description
Dr. Mangun received his BS in Ceramic Engineering and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
During his graduate studies, he gained extensive experience in applied research by designing novel materials for pollution control. His project involved synthesizing activated carbon fibers with controlled pore size and chemistry, characterizing the specific functional groups (utilizing FTIR, XPS, etc.), and testing the adsorption properties. He received honorable mention in the Goodrich Collegiate Inventors Program and also served on the University Committee of Environmental Health & Safety and as assistant editor for Issues in Environmental Science & Engineering.
After graduation, he started EKOS Materials Corporation to further develop and commercialize a new low-cost route to produce carbon fiber assemblies. These new materials were tailored to exhibit enhanced removal of toxic contaminants from both air and water. The information generated from comprehensive testing of these materials has been presented at several conferences, disseminated in over a dozen journal articles(including a recent book chapter "Novel Fibrous Systems for Contaminant Removal," In Sample Preparation in Field and Laboratory), and utilized for subsequent patenting rights.
