The ECLA experience is unlike any other in higher education. From its beginning in 2000, ECLA has emphasised the value of independent thought learnt through the appreciation of a liberal education in an international community.
ECLA aspires to contribute to the educational renovation of liberal education and its teaching in Europe. Our international community of students and faculty engage each other through a curriculum that features a common, interdisciplinary, team-taught core course and a broad selection of complementary electives. Excursions, site visits to important cultural centres in Berlin and frequent guest lecturers help to insure a breadth of learning opportunities. All ECLA students live in one of our three residence halls where the shared experiences of living together provide another important dimension to their lives in the college.
ECLA’s offerings include two full-year academic programmes, the Academy Year and the Project Year, a six-week International Summer University and the two-week Business Seminars following the Winter term. All ECLA programmes seek to immerse students fully in their education through a balanced format of lectures, seminars, one-on-one tutorials and site-visits and are characterised by an emphasis on effective teaching, close student/faculty relationships and a community that strives to nurture in students a commitment to social and civic responsibility.
