About Earth Advantage®
Earth Advantage Institute is a nonprofit organization that works with the building industry to help implement sustainable building practices. Its mission is to advance green building science and create an immediate, practical and cost-effective path to sustainability and reduction of carbon in the built environment. Earth Advantage Institute shares its research results with all interested groups without prejudice, and provides critical data for state, regional and national agencies.
The organization achieves its objectives through an innovative range of programs for industry professionals, including certification of high performance homes, remodels, sustainable communities and commercial spaces. These programs are supported by a top-rated education department, offering basic and advanced classes on building, marketing, and valuing green homes; and by building science research and technical services teams.
Earth Advantage Institute's Energy Performance Score (EPS) is a home energy rating system similar to the miles-per-gallon (MPG) rating for automobiles. Co-developed by Earth Advantage Institute and Energy Trust of Oregon, the EPS provides an easy way to estimate actual home energy consumption, related carbon emissions, and utility costs. Its template-based approach, developed by auditors, gets photo-illustrated reports, recommendations and graphical scorecards into the hands of homeowners quickly.
