EPD Roll Call started out as an experiment on a home page of a huge Internet Web Service. At first the site's creator was bombared with, "hey, I don't want to end up on your web site, don't even think about taking my photo, etc". Eventually, people on the Elgin Police department grew to understand why the site was created in the first place.
Even though we were/are not a huge, metropolitan agency, most people at EPD were in the proverbial dark about things happening in their own department. People getting hurt or hospitalized with illnesses, retired members dying, ceremonies that were planned. The agency was largely dependant upon a department "grape-vine" for information.
This has changed at least somewhat but EPD RC's site creator still believes that there is certainly room for socialization and to build some form of morale by posting positive news items or words of endearment on the internet.
The site has been heralded by retired members as extraordinarily helpful in keeping up with the goings on in the department. As much as police officers will complain that they want nothing more than to "get the hell out of the business", many others lament that they miss the people that they used to work with and some of the crazy antics that they perpetrated.
As an organization involved in public service, it is tantamount that the positives all over that agency be accentuated. The creator of the site freely admits that there is not a Utopia on her agency as is the case everywhere but that there is certainly enough solid, positive work and humanitarian efforts being put forth to warrant public recognition and she is determined that this is a tradition that will be carried out at least as long as she is a member of the department.
