- In India man and nature have always flourished together with remarkable diversity. India's landmass is varied. The forests of the subcontinent, be it from the Himalayas to the Andamans, range from tropical moist evergreens to deciduous trees. Even within the Himalayas there are distinct changes in vegetation and wildlife. trees change from the Terai where the sal is preponderant to even higher up, where oak, juniper, deodar, birch, pine, chestnut and others take over. Up in these mountains, as the climate cools, the animals are larger and hairier. Some parts of these areas like Ladakh turn into a sandy and stony desert. Coming lower down between 700 - 1000 m are thicker forests of the more temperate kind with short, stout trees. Coming into the plains are the dry thorn scrub forests of the Sutlej basin and the dense coastal forest of the Gangetic plain. The mangrove swamps of the Sundarbans, the dry deciduous forests of Ranthambhor all add a richness to this never ending variety.
